Hofesh Shechter (UK): Uprising, In Your Rooms

A Londonban élő izraeli Hofesh Shechter az angol táncélet fiatal csillaga, a világhírű Batsheva és a Jasmon Vardimon Dance Company ex-táncosa. Nem véletlenül bűvölte el a brit és nemzetközi közönséget: minden munkája erőteljes, tele megnyerő ötletekkel. Nevét már most olyan brit koreográfus-nagyságok mellett emlegetik, mint Russell Maliphant vagy Wayne McGregor.

A hét férfitáncosra komponált Uprising című darab a londoni The Place támogatásával született, melynek rendkívüli sikerét látva 2007-ben London három legmeghatározóbb táncos helye (The Place, Southbank Centre, Sadler’s Wells) egyedülálló projektbe fogott: együttesen támogatták Shechter In Your Rooms című produkciójának létrehozását.

Az Uprising táncosai nyers energiájukkal, elfojtott, majd szabadjára engedett indulataikkal, folyékony mozgásukkal veszik birtokba a színpadot. A sötét színpadon hét férfi sziluettje rajzólódik ki ellenfényben. Gomolygó füstből határozott léptekkel, szinte fenyegtően közelednek. Megállnak a klasszikus balettből jól ismert pózban, majd valami egészen más következik: 25 percnyi elszabadult macsó férfienergia. Bandaháborút, kocsmai verekedést idéző koreográfia.

Az In Your Rooms-ban az egyszer működő, máskor félrecsúszó kommunikáció villanásnyi jelenetei elevenednek meg, ahogy a sokaságból az álmok kitekert logikáját követve emelkednek ki párok és csoportok. A sajátosan finom, ugyanakkor rendkívül energikus mozgásvilágból születő rétegek a csoporton belüli automatizmusok és nyájszellem rejtett, szövevényes képleteibe engednek betekintést.

Hofesh Schechter Jeruzsálemben végezte tánctanulmányait a Jerusalem Academy for Dance and Music-on, majd Tel Avivban csatlakozott a világhírű Batsheva társulathoz, ahol többek között Wim Vandekeybus-szel, Tero Saarinennel és Inbal Pintóval dolgozhatott. 2002-ben az Egyesült Királyságba ment és csatlakozott Jasmin Vardimonhoz. Koreográfusként a Fragments című darabbal debütált, amellyel elnyerte a 3. Gyagilev koreográfus verseny első díját. 2004-ben a londoni The Place támogatta a Cult című darab létrehozásában, amely bekerült az öt legjobb munka közé.

Emanuel Gat márciusi vendégszereplése után ismét egy izraeli koreográfus munkáját mutatjuk be, akit már a 2008-as Sziget Fesztiválon is láthatott a hazai közönség.

Hofesh Shechter is one of the UK’s most talked-about young choreographers, delivering intensely physical, breathtaking work that immediately connects with audiences. The vibrant, young, urban edge found in Shechter’s dance has seen him working on the National Theatre’s 2007 production of Saint Joan in London.

A former drummer in a rock band, Shechter has created an intense and percussive live soundtrack to accompany his latest work, the stunning In Your Rooms. The evening is completed by Shechter’s acclaimed Uprising, a highly charged piece which sees seven men emerge from the shadows to bombard the stage with furious energy, set to a throbbing score, again composed by Shechter himself.

Uprising was described by the Herald as “pure pleasure”. A highly charged short work with a propulsive, percussive score, Uprising leaves audiences buzzing.

In Your Rooms brims with playful, gritty physicality and is at times provocative, political and deeply personal, presenting a society which is scarily alienating and yet shockingly familiar. Shechter has assembled a formidable cast of nine performers from the UK’s leading contemporary dance companies. The dancers reveal their shifting motives, their lack of control and their vulnerabilities through intricate, touching encounters. The work also features an original score, created by Shechter in collaboration with Nell Catchpole (The Gogmagogs).

This is your chance to see a highly talented and creative choreographer perform what has been described by the Observer as ‘his breakthrough work’, and the first time an artist has ever been co-produced by London’s three major dance venues: Sadler’s Wells, The Place and Southbank Centre.
